Whipped Body Butter

This is absolutely my favorite DIY recipe.  Since the first time I tried it, I am addicted and can’t live without it.  Literally!  It’s amazing and luxurious.  I’ve made these butters for family, friends, and I even love to give them as gifts on holidays and birthdays.  And let me tell you, people LOVE it.  They come back with their empty jars begging for more.  I’ve even gotten some of the guys addicted also, but thats a post (and slightly different recipe) for another day 😉

This recipe can be modified as needed.  I started with just shea butter and now I have experimented with other oils and I continue to change it each time I make a new batch.  Get creative and have fun with it.  Be prepared to also clean up an oily  mess!

1 cup of shea (omitted cocoa butter)

What you will need:

  • 1/2 c Shea Butter (preferably raw and unrefined)
  • 1/2 c Cocoa Butter (or omit and double the amount of Shea Butter)
  • 1/2 c Coconut Oil, unrefined
  • 1/2 c Sweet Almond Oil (or Olive, Jojoba, or any other light oil)
  • 10-20 drops of Essential Oils (I love to combine Lavender with Sweet Orange, Vanilla, or Peppermint)

In a double boiler over medium heat, melt shea butter, cocoa butter, and coconut oil, stirring until completely melted.  Remove from heat and let cool for about 30 minutes.  Then add in almond oil and essential oils.  Put oil in the freezer for 20 minutes. This step is crucial for the body butter to whip nicely.  Be sure you can scrape the sides down before whipping.  Use hand mixer to whip into a fluffy buttery cream.  This might take some time but keep whipping and scraping down the sides.  Scoop into small clean glass jars and store in a cool dark place.  In the summer if your house gets warm you might want to store this in the fridge.  Because it’s all natural, there is a much shorter shelf life.  I like to make mine in small batches and I am guaranteed to use it all within a few months.  Please note that you won’t need much, it will go on smooth and oily, but your skin will absorb it much quicker than store bought lotions.  Try it out and let me know how it goes.  I hope you enjoy!

This one is 1/2 shea, 1/2 cocoa butter

1/2 shea, 1/2 cocoa butter results in a thicker butter
